Muslim Wedding Guide

 

 

When it comes to a Muslim wedding, you should expect a clear distinction from other religions. A Muslim wedding has three to four core events. However, you may notice some extra events depending on the culture. An average Muslim wedding ceremony takes less than an hour.

Depending on the culture and traditions, you should expect more events. For instance, if you are invited to an Indian Muslim wedding ceremony, it may last for a week. It is extended by local traditions and cultures. Depending on your relation, you may receive an invitation for one event or all of them.

 

Here are some ceremonies you might see at a Muslim Wedding

 

Initial Meeting. It is a courtesy before the wedding proposal,that the groom’s family would propose and formally ask the bride’s family for her hand in marriage. They would offer gifts and sweets, and in order for things to meet a favorable end for the groom and his family. The bride’s family must give their full acceptance to their daughter’s union, this acceptance is called zabaan.

 

Engagement Party. Like most engagement parties the entire purpose of this event is to celebrate the engagement of the soon to be bride and groom. The difference with Indian engagement parties, is the formalities and the proposal, which is done within the event. The groom would present the ring and formally ask for her hand in marriage. What would follow is the discussion of matters concerning the wedding, such as the dates of all the pre and post wedding events.

 

Mayoon Ceremony. As part of their tradition and pre-wedding event , the groom’s mother will apply turmeric on the bride’s skin, because they believe that it will significantly give the bride a healthy glow. This event is usually exclusive or  made private to only female members of the family.

 

 

Baraat. Baraat is a wedding ceremony for the groom and their family. The groom visits the official wedding venue along with family and relatives. The process of getting ready, traveling to the venue, and reception is a part of the Barat ceremony. According to the tradition, the groom usually travels on a well-decorated vehicle and lead the rest of the vehicles. When the Barat reaches the venue, the bride’s family and relatives welcome them by showering flowers over them.

 

 

Bridal Entrance. After The Nikkah the bride would now proceed to the wedding hall. She’d make an entrance with her veil on. This is necessary for them to do the ritual of Muh Dikhai “show your face”. A ritual in which the groom will introduce his newly wed wife to his family. 

 

 

Nikkah. This is usually done in a private room with the IMAM, the bride, groom, and at most two witnesses. The IMAM would discuss , and impart all the contents in their marriage contract . This is to ensure that the couple is aware of their responsibilities in marriage, after that the couple would affix their signature, which signifies their understanding and acknowledgement of all the matters that have been discussed.

 

 

D’ua Prayers. These are wishful prayers to bless the newly wed to have a happy and long marriage. This ritual is lead by the IMAM, and as everyone gives their undivided attention and utmost respect to Allah, they would ask for the couple’s happiness, fertility and above all health. Wedding Banquet. The banquet is a post wedding event , where the families on both sides along with their closest friends gather to celebrate, mingle, have a traditional meal together and dance with the newlyweds. For some, especially traditional families they would play religious hymns for the entire festivity.

 

Rukhsati. Marking the final moments of the wedding , the newlyweds would say their goodbyes with their guests, they’d hug and wish each other well. In this event the bride would perform a ritual in which she would walk from the stage to the exit with the Qur’an placed on her head. This is done to bless and protect the newlywed bride. This is also a very ceremonious moment for her parents as this signifies her departure from them to build a family of her own.

 

 

Walima. Walima ( Marriage Banquets) the second half  in Muslim traditional wedding , it is usually held by the Grooms family, but these days the outcome of the banquet depends on  the groom and bride’s families well coordinated plans. Walima marks the start of the post wedding festivities, and it  usually comes after the Nikkah (Marriage Ceremony).
